I would describe it more as "used as reference" than "relied on".
(In other words, it's not my fault...)  :P

I think it changes the meaning somewhat.
IMO it is a classic example of trying to fix something that is not broke.  This
happens all the time in the translation business.  Someone receives a
translation job that comes with (decent) reference material, and instead of
following the example given, they feel a need to change wordings and style to
make it look like they actually did the translation rather than just using
existing material (even if that would be the best choice).  For this reason I
expect the EoE script to be similar yet different from my script -- a case of
dissonant deja vu.
