I disagree here... Contemptful because of her outside shell and promise to 
never let anybody inside perhaps. --> She does let it slide however but 
quickly regains herself - (After the kiss - mouthwashing etc... But don't 
forget the soft voice there until she realized what she was doing and pushed 
him away.)   You claim there is no affection but I believe there is quite a 
bit.  Inside the volcano when Shinji jumps down and catches her - result...  
The golden Asuka smile and soft voice.  Don't tell me it is solidly because 
of her looks.  Forgetting the touch to the face at the end of EoE are we?  
(Even though that could be discussed some more...)

The relationship between Shinji & Rei is more of a brother / sister kind of 
thing.  Keep in mind - he first sees her and Touji / Kensuke freak out and 
talk about her body, calves etc... He says No - He was just wondering why 
she was alone.  I'm not arguing that he doesn't care about her - He does... 
It's just in a family/good friend type way.

He cares about the both of them but I'd still trust the good friend role to 
Rei and the relationship role to Asuka.  It's there - Just not really 
developed considering the circumstances surrounding the characters.  There's 
too much evidence to show... And besides - That's how it's supposed to be 
^_~;
