It's who Shinji chose in the series regardless.  There was clearly something 
going on between the two of them and you cannot deny it.  And discarding 
Asuka's rough external shell, her and Shinji clearly needed each other and 
were perfect.. But enough of the rule breaking about pairing, ne?
