While the characters can be mapped out to the sephiroths, the angels 
are designed according to their associations in various occult 
sources.  For instance, Eva Unit 03 becomes possessed when the 
transport Neopan 400 passes through a cumulo-nimbus cloud.  A cumulo-
nimbus cloud is one that usually results in hail, and they are very 
dangerous and difficult to pilot through.  This fits Bardiel quite 
well, as he is the Angel of hail.  He is also referred to as the 
shameful son of God.

Zereul is known as the angel of might, and is associated with the 
moon.  He was quite formidable, and his appearance does mark a turning 
point in the series, which is fitting as the moon symbolizes destiny.

Some obvious connections:

Sachiel is the angel of water.
Ramiel is the angel of thunder.
Arael is the angel of the heavens.
Sahaquiel is the angel of the sky.
Gaghiel is the angel of fish.
Tabris is the angel of free will.

There are a lot of little things like that, as for their design, we 
often associate angels with cute little winged children.... which 
became popularized by art.  But if you've ever read an actual bible you 
will know that angels are quite bizarre, they sometimes are human like 
with multiple wings.  But in general they appear as crystal shapes 
(Ramiel), great wheels of fire or energy (Armisael), or as having 
multiple eyes and wings going in every direction (Sahaquiel, matarael, 
arael).

I intend to compile information on the Angels in the near future, 
because I have yet to find one really comprehensive guide.  Only the 
angel list is up for now on my site.
