Hi Peter. Thanks for your review. Hope you don't mind my inserts.
:
: My EoE DVD review...
:
: Menus: Look pretty, but the design is off in some places. However,
there is
: an issue with the disc not accepting my
:
: Cover Art: While a great image, it isn't a good cover. The insert
image,
: while obviously created from inshow material, is better IMHO.
I like the Gainax R2 DVD picture, which has Misato as well.
:
: Audio: I've known for over a year now that Manga was really big on
getting
: 5.1 sound for EoE. I mean really big. Realize that the R1 DVD has
better
: audio than the R2. A lot of time, and money went into those 6(!) audio
: tracks. I'm disappointed that this is where the majority of money
went, but
: not surprised.
I only have stereo TV so can't comment.
:
: Video: Nice. Eva can't get that much better.
Something good! I presume subs can be switched on & off either from
menu, remote or both?
:
: The translation: Okay, I'm listing the mistakes.
: "New Century Evangelion" - Someone didn't get the memo from Gainax...
The
: show's title in English is Neon Genesis Evangelion.
AWL should have known that by heart!
:
: The whole Adam/Lillith line. Bochan, have you given your stuff to
Madman
: Entertainment? They might be able to use it for their DVD release of
the EVA
: films...
I have the Madman versions on order. EoE due Oct 8th....so if the
translation has been corrected, its probably been done. But would Madman
be allowed to change it if sub-licensing off their own bat?
:
: "The Beast at the heart of the world." - The episode title for Episode
26
: (original) is mistranslated during the whole second it flashes on
screen.
: (I'm going through the film completely for my audio commentary. I'm
still
: working on it...) Should be "The Beast that cried Love at the heart of
the
: World" Incredibly petty, but still...
:
: "My Pure Heart for you" The title "Sincerely Yours" is used on the
insert.
:
: The Fan Mail. Only the last one is translated, which kinda changes the
: meaning of the images. There are about as many positive messages there
as
: negative ones.
:
: It's better overall than ADV's translation, but not as good as
: Bochan_Bird's.
Interesting in what ways is it better than ADV's (sub) translations?
:
: The Dub: A few major issues. Everyone is Christian all of a sudden.
"Sweet
: Jesus!" "Jesus Christ!" "Goddamn!" They're Japanese. They wouldn't use
: Christian swearing. The main cast is pretty much at the same level
they were
: in the TV series. Acceptable. I'll do a more indepth dub cast review,
but
: suffice it to say that I feel it does justice to the film. It could
have
: been a lot better, but it isn't terrible.
This reminds me that Misato's very first word in episode #1 is "moh",
which Matt Greenfield translated as "Christ" in the sub, but "darn" or
"damn" for his dub version. "Geez" is more normal.
:
: Other stuff: This is the theatrical cut. (Which while it has a better
credit
: structure and eyecatches, loses the surrealness involving Asuka's
"spoken"
: line, and the next episode preview, which is pretty much a test run
for the
: ED for Karekano.) One of my fears, that the dub would digtially add
Allison
: Keith, Amanda Winn Lee and Tiffany Grant to the Live Action sequence
didn't
: happen, mostly because it would have been too expensive, but because
Amanda
: Winn Lee didn't know that the voice actors played the parts in the
live
: action sequence. (She talked about how she heard a rumor and couldn't
get
: confirmation. Apparently looking at the credits of the film eluded
her...)
Of course she could have checked a seiiyu database, or just looked up a
magazine/book/Gainax. But she did not care about the sub anyway. No US
director really does IMO.
:
: But I Digress. It's an okay DVD. I haven't have had any major problems
with
: my disc on the two players I've tried it on. More to come.

Which player did you try please? Looking forward to more :)
