Okay, I'm not fully sure of some of this, but here I go...

Okay, first off, I have a hunch that Manga/Gaijin Studios may not have 
recieved a proper script from Gainax. Their commentary hints at that, 
because they mention having to play scenes over and over again to get the 
audio. (Though it could be that the script just didn't include lines added 
in post production or the wallas, but I doubt that.)

Now, the films went through 3 translators. (And they still screwed some 
simple stuff up... ARGH!)

Amanda Winn Lee wrote the dub script herself, based on their translation. 
Also, since her studio handled the sub script as well, she probably (but I'm 
not fully sure) had some say in the wording of the sub script. (Most likely 
in the rephrasing

Since the dub studio was also responsible for the subtitle script, it isn't 
that unreasonable that the dub is so similar to the subtitles.

My full review of the translation of the EVA films is forthcoming...
