Indeed. And, in fact, that's not what "popped otta its back". Unit 01
just "bulged" muscles a bit and tore the restraining armor off.

Although we know that the manga and the tv series diverge on many
aspects, it is interesting to note that in the paper version Unit 01 is
shown chomping Zeruel's elongated 'neck' and face only.
