I think it may have to do with the way VAs are viewed (and view themselves) in
the US and Japan. From what I have seen in the US, VAs sometimes develop
somewhat of an actor/actress (= star) mentality, and some develop egos to
boot. In Japan VAs are seen as employees under contract, and may or may not
achieve celebrity status depending on the caliber of their performance and
popularity with the fans. However, even so they are still essentially
employees under contract, and the ones I have met are very down-to-earth
people who are pleasantly surprised that a "voice" could become so popular
(although they wish it would lead to higher fees...).
