Actually, Keith told me a while back that, unlike Japanese voice-over
sessions where the staff gathers together and there is actual interplay
between the different VAs, in the US each part is recorded individually
and then mixed together. This is due to various factors such as distance
(VAs living far apart) and problems getting everyone's schedules to
match. So more often than not it is just a single VA recording his/her
lines while watching an image and listening to other voices or cues
through headphones.
This may also be one problem behind the (IMO) lower quality voice-overs...
