Since you are new to the series, you might not actually want to read the
answer to this, so its a line or to down, but heres the obligatory ***Huge
Spoiler Warning***

Short, not much spoiler answer: Adam is the first angel, somehow connected
with the mysterious first impact that devasted much of the planet. Much less
is firmly known about Lilith, especially without destroying the plot for you.
Suffice to say that she was the first consort of Adam, when he still lived in
the Garden.

Longer, super spoiler answer: Adam is believed to be the father of both the
Angels (Disciples) and of Humanity (Lilim, Lilums). In Judeo-Christian
tradition, Adam bore a race of monsters by his first consort, Lilith, the one
who rose from the earth, these were humans, who ate of the fruit of wisdom. By
Eve, the one who came from Adam himself, he bore the Angels, who ate of the
fruit of life. Essentially, making angels and humans different evolutionary
branches of each other...possibly. Thats all in the real of theory, more or
less. This is Shin Seiki Evangelion canon, however (from RCB and other
sources, namely the series itself) Adam is the first angel and was found in
Anartica by GEHRIN (predates NERV), reduced to embryonic state, was used to
accidently set off set impact in a hasty attempt to evolve all of humanity,
when Ikari Yui, piloting EVA-01, made contact with Longinus' Lance. Lilith is
debatably the second angel, and was kept under NERV HQ for most of the series,
impaled by the Lance. Or at least thats my understanding, but I of course
didn't delve into all the complexities of the series...horrible grammar, ain't
it? I would suggest consulting either www.EvaOtaku.com or
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Fuji/3082/frame.html for basically every single
answer to any concievable question answerable by someone who is not Anno-san
or Sadamoto-san.
