Maybe. It's one way to look at things. But she asks Asuka if she pilots to have
the others' praise. That is not a mean remark, it is IMO an attempt on Rei's
part to get Asuka to see things the right way. It is Asuka who wonders whether
Rei is upset about her remarks on Shinji (probably out of 'jealousy', though the
word dowsn't really fit).
