[EVA] Rei's Origins [Spoilers -- if you haven't seen after ep. 18 or so]

What do you mean "free of the burden of loyalty"?  I'm
guessing that what you mean is that Rei II exhibited
emotions right before her Eva went SPLAT! all over
Tokyo-3.  By doing so, she saved Shinji and also freed
herself of the burden to Gendo.  I believe the scene
is where she's crying about her imminent decision to
self-destruct.  So is it true that Rei clones can
remember their predecessors?

I always thought that, in the "Merge" scene in EoE,
Rei III disobeyed Gendo because she had no reason to
do what he asked.  Instead, she handed Complementation
to Shinji because ... I dunno. He was a better person?
 

Anyway, I was delighted to see that there were so many
responses to this thread.  I gotta thank EBJ for the
whole clearing up of the timeline thing.  I had a VERY
vague idea of what happened pre-2015.  Now, I think I
have a better grasp of it.  I kinda wish there was a
prequel to NGE, though.  Something that'll give more
info. on the pre-2015 world instead of 5 minute
flashbacks every episode.  I'm on my third viewing of
the entire series and my fourth of the movie and I
STILL don't understand a lot of EoE, Eps. 25/26.

Uhh...I have one example. The example is during the
7th Angel, the one that's requires the synch pads. 
It's kind of lame, but I think it proves my point. 
Anyway, the scene where:

Asuka:  This is impossible!  You expect me to sink
down to the level of this animated turnip?

Shinji:  *Falls down*

Asuka:  Oh well.  I guess I'll continue.  You haven't
got anyone else, now do you? *Smirks*

Misato:  *Slightly grins*  Rei.

Rei:  Yes?

Misato:  You will synchronize with Shinji.

Rei:  Yes.

[Ensuing scene where Rei and Shinji synchronize very
well and manage to shut up Asuka in 30 seconds].

Misato:  I guess I should change the operation to Rei
and Shinji.

Asuka:  *Speechless* [Runs out of the room]

That's the only good example I can think up of right
now.
