I also liked the idea of Kaworu teaching Shinji to swim with the literal
"sink or swim" metaphor of sorts and how Shinji would have "cried without
reason".

Maybe Rebuild at least will give us something in either case if there's
enough time...

Speaking of Rebuild (Mild Rebuild 2.0 spoiler, highlight to read!): In a
nice parallel to Rei keeping Gendo's glasses in Evangelion 1.0, Evangelion
2.0 reveals that Shinji's SDAT used to be Gendo's. End Spoiler

Anyway, I don't have much else to add at the moment, maybe I'll think of
something later.
