[EVA] Did Shinji rape Asuka (in EoE)?

Or fanservice at all to that matter. Wasn't one of the major themes of EoE that not everything gets a happy ending, to contrast it with all the other Giant Robot shows (and anime in general) which had been giving non-consequence endings to their series? The infamous quote about being an adult and watching shows with giant robots comes to mind. 

While the "Anno did EoE because he hates fandom!" meme is absurd, that he wasn't trying to play with their expectations isn't. Shinji already was the everyman of the series, the audience viewpoint character, and that was taken to the extremes of otaku culture. Shinji has poor social skills and can't interact with women. He really is meant to stand for part of the audience.
