I think the word "somehow" is important. I believe Anno was aware of  
a (that is, his) hypocrisy here, since Eva was never shy about  
presenting Asuka with fan service. To an otaku (and Anno is an  
otaku), all anime are porn anime—but you're supposed to be coy about  
this, instead of holding up a hand to the camera that could be either  
the viewer's, or the director's—or both.
