[EVA] Gender analysis in the series, vis a vis Asuka and Misato

Logical counterpoint:  Anno grew so disgusted with the endless merchandising of Eva, the thousands of naked Asuka and Rei statuettes, that he put in the opening scene of End of Eva (not the whole thing just the first scene) as sort of a "this is what you fanboys are really like, you ignored our character study and just made a ton of porn" thing.

I really think the naughty fanart detracts from our overall understanding of the series.

Even say, Peter Jackson, was known for his splatter-fest films, but his later work wasn't filled with gore.

CONVERSELY, and I want to stress this, fanfic doesn't necessarily need to be pornographic to be detracting from the series (i.e. if its very poorly written and misinterprets the whole thing).

Where does the line between wildly divergent fanfic, and a really off the wall "interpretation" end?

All stems from that we only had bootleg fansubs of End of Eva for 5 years, and all were free to make up their own ending....that became fanfic, of a sort.

But Eva remains "that show no one understands" and it also remains "that show with fanfiction that is barely related to the themes or tone of the actual series".....I think these are directly related.

The self-serving, misinterpretted fanfiction has been allowed to run rampant for too long.  It's time to rein in the brutes.

You, er, V, may have that point of view, but it is also true that Gainax themselves have always taken the opposite view towards fan-made things, particularly the pornographic ones. When I spoke of Anno and Sadamoto contributing to doujinshi, I meant pornographic doujinshi. They began as convention organizers, parody film makers, and sellers of the kind of stuff you find in artists' s alleys. This doesn't mean you have to agree or to emulate them, but these are the kind of people who made Evangelion in the first place. The TV series is packed with fan service--that aspect of Eva was not invented by the toy companies, it was invented by Gainax.
