That's one of the good ANd bad things about End of... you are never
explained how each character feels (or rather, how Shinji feels) in words,
you are challenged to put yourself in his shoes, live this as if it were a
first person shooter (hello MW2) and try to understand it from your own
preconceptions.
You say Shinji's a broken being because that kiss took his surrogate mom,
some might argue it has more to do with the fact that finally, in that
moment, Shinji realized there was a finality to everything; it all comes
tumbling down. Kaworu might be dead, bu he was an angel, so under the
Weber bureaucratic nightmare that is Nerv, it's alright for Shinji to kill
him; Asuka might be dying, but under the "ends justify means" rationale,
she's just buying time for Shinji to go and help her.
That's probably the quintessential concept behind eva, much to some
people's chagrin; you can try to explain it from a subjective point of view,
but objectively, it's always open to interpretation.
After all, wasn't Anno himself the one who said "I have no problems with
it"?
He might as well have been talking about the whole franchise, reboot,
redeath, retake, rebuild and remilking of it all.
