I'm not sure he's quite to that level of pathetic (EOE) but what I noticed
was Section 2 was a lot more competent looking, their instant appearance
once Shinji'd decided to return implying they'd tracked him the whole time,
rather than apparently losing him as in the series.

Misato's dad still being alive and kicking was something that never crossed
my mind, but that -would- be a major twist to both Misato's backstory, as
well as to the main plotline.  On the other hand, her antipathy for him
could still be so strong that even fifteen years later she still refers to
him as if he were still around.
