Ramiel was very impressive in regards to animation, I'm in total agreement
there.
The Toji & Kensuke (as other too-quick scenes) was too short. I felt that
if I had not been familiiar, or only slightly, with the TV story, I would
have missed certain bits if I blinked such as when they got into the plug
with Shinji. Because those scenes were over so quickly, their emotional
impact was lost and the scenes became just tokens.
Not following the Japanese much, did Toji punch Shinji because of his
sister, because Shinji was an Eva pilot?
I did enjoy the Misato-Ritsuko chats. It was more what two former college
friends, both working together might have been like. But Misato's manner &
speech are bordering on irritating, instead of the softer more sympathetic
Misato from Eva TV & manga. I've not watched the TV yet to compare, but I'm
looking forward see "my" Eva again! Rei smile III is the best so far IMO!
Operation Yashima's planning & the meeting was an interesting scene. It
lacked being Misato's show with Gendou's approval so much. I prefer the
inspiration from desperation of episode 6, & Misato requisitioning the gun
from R & D. But that was too light for 1.01.
For new viewers, Rebuild may become the 1 & only Evangelion, as EoE has
become for the story's ending. For Eva vets, I hope it doesn't. Its good,
but its not a replacement - same as the Z Gundam movies are not for that
show's TV series. Rebuild 1.01 is shallower than the 1st 6 TV episodes
atmospherically, emotionally - & is more on Nadia's level. Perhaps 1.01 is
more live-action style & (voice) acting made into animation (was the LA
movie scripting an influence possibly?), rather than purer
anime/manga/novel.
The script on the DVD...I wonder if/how much they will be used for
subtitling.
