Yes, in a Nov 95 or 96 Newtype IIRC. But The Protculture Addicts
#75(?)(Escaflowne cover), the one that covered AX96, in which Anno was a
guest, had an interview with him, & an article with his quotes on
inspiration, & reactions to Eva.

The way I saw it, having seen Eva TV before EoE. The TV is self-contained &
not needing an elaboration. 25 & 26 can (& IMO should) be taken as a
separate, independent, work of art, storytelling, & ending.

Eva TV. Shinji returns to save NERV yet again. He's already psyched-up over
Toji, Gendou's betrayal, confusion over his mother, Rei II dead, then Asuka
being hospitalised & comatose, the school evacuating, Rei returning (III) &
being cold...& Misato's detachment with her new pre-occupation following
Kaji's crusade. Then Shinji's final chance of happiness, his new friend,
turns out to be public enemy #1 & Shinji has to kill him - which he does his
fondness having turned to bitter hatred. So he's churning mentally &
physically. If he had the power THEN, he would have self-destructed the
world in anger. Not mentally imploded. TV & manga Shinjis are closer than
EoE Shinji.

The main plot differences are 1) Anno changed Shinji from his TV-self, to a
much more traumatised boy than 24's ending leaves him, and there is no
interference from SEELE. That really is where the TV & EoE plots diverge.
No external hacks or shutdowns, Gendou goes right ahead, as he is
anticipating reprisals, but *gets Complementation started first* using Rei
(who might also be slightly different). As a consequence there is no attack
to fight off, Asuka need not be evacuated (hence *her* chapter in 25, which
"mother" replaced in 02-in-the-lake in 25'). Shinji is not needed in 01
again & the "Seroph ritual" torture does not happen.

Misato & Ritsuko...kill each other. The final breakdown of friendship &
standoff. Misato catches Ritsuko, shoots her, walks away. Ritsuko is not
dead, still holding her gun, eaten up with hate, shoots Misato in the back
killing her & falls back dead. Or it just be angry "wish" images from
TV-Shinji's mind, symbolic images of his rejection of their institution &
authority.
