Aaron: "I'm not telling you to embrace my perspective, I'd just like you not
to write in a way that feels a bit too scoffing" was addressed to *me*, not
Rachel. Yes, my first post in the start of this EoTV/EoE debate was
adversarial, but I apologized for it and moved on.
That out of the way...
While Evangelion can have different interpretations, I personally think that
the series does have a particular message about Depression (Anno suffered
depression for 4 years before making Eva as well as supposedly had a nervous
breakdown in the middle of production although I never knew if this
breakdown tidbit was fact or not): Life is what it is despite it's pain and
pleasure, but as long as you decide to stay here, to keep on living; you do
have a shot at being happy.
I think part of the reason why people can be so gung-ho about their opinions
is because "if you're normal/not suffering from depression, Evangelion
won't make sense to you" to paraphrase one of the Gainax members, maybe even
Anno. People like me that have these problems (depression/anxiety) are drawn
to the show and it's many different interpretations, not just getting them
to think about life but maybe even how to change THEIR life for the better.
And that is why I love this masterpiece.
