[EVA] Gendou - man or monster?

You're right that someone looking at Rei from the outside would
wonder (even Shinji wondered) about her circumstances. If we consider
the rather industrial, patched-together looking lab where Rei is said
to have grown up, Rei wouldn't think her run-down apartment was
anything abnormal, and being a loner in class, she wouldn't have the
chance to learn otherwise. But nevertheless, she seems happy at least
in her personal relationship to Gendo, which is a big difference
between her and Shinji.
