Nitpick: The above is an extremely simplified statement and the matter is 
much more complicated than this. Conditionals are your friend, in any case.

Instrumentality if completed would annihilate all selves. In EoTV, Shinji 
comes to the realization that it is possible for him to live a life without 
Eva and that it is okay to exist after all. The confining enclosure of the 
auditorium (our "theatre" for Instrumentality) shatters so that he might be 
congratulated by other people, and we see everywhere somewhat surreally 
standing above a "big blue ball" (apparently Earth). This can be thought of 
as a parallel to the shattering of the Black Moon, which frees the souls of 
humanity and enables them to return to individual existences in the physical 
world.
