[EVA] Gendou - man or monster?

Carl:

The main problem, from my perspective, is that the moralistic perspective
(along with what comes across as a suffocating opinionism) seems to be
overwhelming all else. Namely, it is difficult to see Gendo or Yui be
mentioned here without some smear tucked in; one cannot mention these
characters without commenting on what *horrible people* they are. "That
asshole Gendo", "that bitch Yui". On the other end of things, characters
like Misato and Kaji cannot be mentioned without commenting on how wonderful
they turned out despite adversity, and why couldn't Yui and Gendo have been
more like them. I like Misato and Kaji and all, but this has quickly become
tiresome nepotism.

Moralistic observations made with proper framing and in relevant/reasonable
quantity are fine, but it really has mutated out of proportion in your posts
and others. Meanwhile, I and a couple of others have attempted to introduce
other perspectives to perhaps challenge the norm, and these seem to be
basically met with the dismissive response (paraphrasing), "Yeah, okay, BUT
<insert moralizing rhetoric>." (And then RJN chips in, "Yes, I agree."
Lather, rinse, repeat...)

Elsewhere I've discussed these things, there's usually a wide enough breadth
of opinions for the conversations to avoid hitting one-sided "Person A is a
sinner/saint, end of story" brick walls, and many interesting and
stimulating discussions have been had. Here, the apparent inability to
permit shades of grey creates a rather self-righteous atmosphere.
