Agreed, There is no whitewash for Gendou.

And lets not forget the comments he made to Rei I about Naoko.  He uses 
everyone. And I can't help wonder if he used Yui to get prestige with 
Gehrin.  Gendou hated the world before he met Yui, he was the obnoxious 
bruiser Fuyutuski despised (but got along with for Yui's/memory's sake).  It 
wasn't too hard for Gendou to want or join with with Keele Lorenz to re-boot 
mankind.

True Shinji & Gendou both have self-hate.  But Shinji is only part Gendou. 
Given a chance he would be a nice kid, with girlfriends & buddies. But he is 
abused through neglect & mental cruelty, & blames his father & himself.  His 
self-hate is turned inward.  Gendou's is turned outward.  Neither loves 
themself enough to care for others.  Its what Misato tried to teach Shinji, 
"look after yourself".  She must have gone throught the same due her silent 
period after 2I.

I hope Shinji gets his salvation. Asuka found hers through her mother in 02. 
Misato found hers through self-sacrife paying the ultimate price.  They were 
both children mentally. though of different ages.  Gendou was refused 
because he was seen through by Yui/Rei/Lilith, he was contamination.

But even Gendou might come back, if he chooses, following the EoE path.
