Yeah, he did fail him. Big time. I don't mean to keep hammering home  
the point, but if he could take time out from his work ethic to  
mentor Rei and bone Ritsuko, surely he could have made some time for  
his own flesh and blood. Gendo is not the only person in the world  
who ever lost a spouse, for Christ's sake--in fact, thanks to a  
little thing he might know about called the Second Impact, there are  
likely a lot of people on Earth in that position. He's a great  
bastard of a character who keeps his pimp hand strong, but he is a  
great bastard nonetheless.
