[EVA] Rei in Eva 00 alone = ineffective

Of course, in Stage 1 of the manga, Rei is shown as fighting (and
being severely injured) in Unit-01 against Sachiel. Since Stage 1 was
drawn in late 1994, during the early production of the TV series, I
wonder if there was a plan at one point to include this scene in
episode 1 of the anime. Perhaps Anno thought it was more dramatic to
save the first sight of Unit-01 (excepting the opening credits, of
course) for when Shinji meets his dad. Since this doesn't happen
until Stage 2 of the manga, perhaps likewise Sadamoto felt it would
be odd to have the first chapter of a new manga called "Neon Genesis
Evangelion," and not actually show the Evangelion in it ^_^
