I assumed that at the start of the show, Rei suffers from injuries suffered 
in the synch test we later were shown, when Gendou ran in to open the plug 
and check on Rei.

My assumption at the time of viewing was that either Rei's injuries seen in 
the flashback weren't as obvious at the point when Gendou opened the plug 
(severe internal injuries, broken bones held in place by the plug-suit, 
maybe a later degradation of her condition), or it was just a genuine 
failure of continuity - or revisionism - on the part of the writers.

Either way, I expect the melodrama of the scenes is the important thing, 
rather than the minutia of the details.

@ When Gendou first gets a look at Rei in 1.01, she looks weak, has blood 
trickling out of her mouth. So you could be right.

Its interesting to note that that incident took place before Misato was 
there.  Only Ritsuko, Maya & Gendou.  No Fuyutuski either.  This is why I 
think its Rei's first test in Eva 00, & not why she is injured when Shinji 
arrives.

There is also the matter of NERV knowing about AT fields at the start, but 
not really how to penetrate them to get at an angel's core.  So Rei in 00 
would have been facing the angel, unable to breach it & without 01's 
beserkness to equal the angel, or Asuka's skills.  She & 00 would have been 
thrashed, as Shinji in 01 was at the start.

Misato & Ritsuko were desperate to get Shinji to pilot 01 initially, & their 
predictions as he was being hammered before 01 beserked, indicated they had 
watched Rei being battered & defeated.  The fact that Misato went to pick up 
Shinji herself, in the middle of a battle (& sent her sext pic) also shows 
how keen she was to have Shinji as relaxed as possible.
