[EVA] Rei in Eva 00 alone = ineffective

I assumed that at the start of the show, Rei suffers from injuries suffered in the synch test we later were shown, when Gendou ran in to open the plug and check on Rei.
My assumption at the time of viewing was that either Rei's injuries seen in the flashback weren't as obvious at the point when Gendou opened the plug (severe internal injuries, broken bones held in place by the plug-suit, maybe a later degradation of her condition), or it was just a genuine failure of continuity - or revisionism - on the part of the writers.
Either way, I expect the melodrama of the scenes is the important thing, rather than the minutia of the details.

Having watched 1.01 & TV eps 1 - 6 recently. Something that had always been
at the back of my mind bubbled forth.
Rei fighting solo against angels in Eva 00 is ineffective. We don't see how
she was injured, or how quickly she & 00 were incapacitated against the
show's 1st angel, if it was that one. I wonder if Rei used any AT field
defence, how she reacted on her own initiative, & how Gendou & Misato
directed, or misdirected rather her actions, if at all.
Rei's injuries & 00's state are seen & inferred are very severe. Did Gendou
deliberately let her get beaten up, anticipating Shinji might need shocking
into agreeing to pilot 00, & also as justification for calling Shinji in
front of SEES?
Later Rei is used as backup for Shinji in Operation Yashima, & as backup to
Shinji & Asuka, though Gendou wanted to keep her back & safer.
